We’re delighted to announce that we’ve been awarded £500 from Mencap to promote the Learning Disability Register, help people understand what it is, and feel more confident joining it.
The project will run in Calderdale through our Calderdale Self Advocacy Network, which is a member‑led service that supports people with learning disabilities to speak up for themselves.
We’ve found that many people with learning disabilities are not on the Learning Disability Register, particularly people from minoritised communities. This is because health information is not always shared in ways that feel accessible, culturally relevant, or available in their own language.
This is especially true for people from Urdu‑speaking minoritised communities, who miss out on important health support by not being on the Learning Disability Register. This project aims to change that.
We will deliver small group sessions across Calderdale, offering clear and friendly information about the Learning Disability Register. Sessions will be delivered in Urdu by a trusted community interpreter and co‑delivered by people with lived experience of learning disability. Sessions will be relaxed and welcoming, with time to ask questions and talk things through.
Here, people will learn what the register is, why it matters, and how it can help improve access to health care and reasonable adjustments. We will also offer practical, hands‑on support, including help contacting GP practices or completing simple forms.
We’d like to say a huge thank you to Mencap for this funding, which will help more people feel informed, supported, and confident accessing the health care they are entitled to.
