Cloverleaf visits Westminster to discuss Supreme Court ruling

Published: 17/07/2026

Cloverleaf Advocacy’s Chief Executive, Suzi Henderson and Acting Operations Director Amy Lynch, travelled to Westminster on the 7th of July and met with several MPs including Kim Leadbeater and Karl Turner.

Earlier this year the Supreme Court ruled that the vital protections which previously underpinned a Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLs) would be torn up. This means that thousands of vulnerable people who have been assessed as lacking capacity relating to their care and living arrangements, will no longer have these automatic rights and safeguards.

Our mission was to inform MPs about the impact the recent ruling will have on the most vulnerable people in society, including people living with dementia in care homes, autistic people living in supportive living placements and people with learning disabilities who live in a residential care placement.

Suzi Henderson, CEO of Cloverleaf said. “We are calling for MPs to work with us, and the wider advocacy sector, to ensure the government urgently responds to this judgement by producing clear guidelines which will ensure the people we represent continue to have access to independent advocacy as a safeguard.”

Karl Turner MP said, “It was a most informative and instructive meeting, we understand why people are so worried and concerned, we will raise this matter in Parliament, and we are grateful to Cloverleaf Advocacy for bringing this to our attention.”

The whole advocacy sector is united in the view that this loss of rights is a regressive step which will leave some of the most vulnerable people in our society unprotected, voiceless and living behind closed doors.

We will keep you regularly updated and informed of our progress.
