Setting the Record Straight on Autism and Misinformation

Published: 24/09/2025

At Cloverleaf, we are deeply concerned and saddened by recent unfounded comments from the Trump administration linking autism to paracetamol (Tylenol/acetaminophen), vaccines, and other supposed causes. These claims have been firmly rejected by medical experts, the Autism Society, and other leading organisations. It is vital to set the record straight.

Repeated speculation about the “causes” of autism is not only inaccurate—it fuels stigma, increases anxiety for families, and distracts from what truly matters. Autism is a lifelong neurodevelopmental difference. There is no “cure,” nor should there be. Instead, research and resources should focus on building understanding, respect, and support so that autistic people can thrive.

“As an organisation that supports autistic people in finding and using their voices, we are deeply concerned about the harm this misinformation may cause,” says Suzi, CEO of Cloverleaf. “Families and autistic people deserve clear, evidence-based guidance—not fear or confusion.”

What does the science say?
Vaccines do not cause autism. This has been rigorously studied and consistently disproven.

Paracetamol use during pregnancy has not been proven to cause autism. A few small, low-quality studies have suggested possible links, but stronger, well-controlled research shows no reliable evidence of a connection. Pregnant people should continue following NHS guidance.

Rising autism diagnoses reflect greater awareness and understanding. More people are being identified because professionals and society are improving in recognition and acceptance—not because of a new environmental “epidemic.”

Our call to action
We ask policymakers, the media, and public figures to speak about autism with care and accuracy. Families deserve clear, evidence-based information and reassurance—not fear or confusion.
Above all, autistic voices, experiences, and needs must be valued far more than political rhetoric. Real change comes from support, inclusion, and respect.

National Autistic Society is calling on people to sign their open letter and they will share it with any politician or media figure who makes a false claim about autism, so they know that truth matters.
