Learning Disability Week 2024: Do you see me?

This week is Learning Disability Week and the theme for this year is ‘do you see me?’ 

 

It’s a chance for us to listen to what life is like for people with learning disabilities and ensure their voices are heard.  It’s an opportunity for us to break down misconceptions, raise awareness, champion inclusivity and support everyone in our communities. 

 

Understanding Learning Disabilities 

 

A learning disability is ‘a reduced intellectual ability and difficulty with everyday activities, for example household tasks, socialising or managing money – which affects someone for their whole life’ (Mencap). 

 

People with a learning disability can take longer to process everyday tasks and activities and may need additional support with education, communication and learning new skills. 

 

The level of support someone with a learning disability may require can vary depending on their disability. Someone with a mild learning disability may only need help with certain tasks, whilst someone with a complex learning disability might need full-time care. 

 

What do we have planned for Learning Disability Week 2024? 

 

This year Cloverleaf-run services are working in partnership with other local service providers to deliver several events across Kirklees, Calderdale and North Lincolnshire. This includes workshops, picnics, health events, fashion shows and drop-in sessions. 

 

Lead the Way 

 

 

Lead the Way has a jam-packed week of events including an accessible walk and Chi Chi fit. Saalihah and Roy will be at Halifax Market on Thursday sharing stories with advocates.  

 

For over ten years, Lead the Way has been supporting people with learning disabilities in Calderdale live the lives they want to live.  

 

They provide 1:1 advice and information, run groups, events, and activities, and support people to access the health and social care services they want and need.   

 

The work they do is vital to help ensure that people with learning disabilities are seen and treated as equal members of our society and can feel safe and supported within their communities.

Kirklees Involvement Network (KIN) 

 

 

 

Kirklees Involvement Network will be running a full week of events from days out at the splash park to fashion shows and their popular picnic- details of which can be found below.

KIN host their picnic in the park every year. Unfortunately, the cost of the event is higher this year than in previous years and we need your help. 

 

Picnic in the Park is for anyone with a learning disability, their family, friends, and the wider community. It's a day to celebrate the Learning Disability community in Kirklees, breaking down barriers and helping create a friendlier, fairer, and more welcoming world for everyone.
