Support Kirklees Picnic in the Park
05/06/2024
Every year, Kirklees Involvement Network hosts a Picnic in the Park as part of Learning Disabilities Week.
Unfortunately, the cost of the event is higher this year than in previous years, meaning we need your help. If you could take a minute to donate to help us make this a special day for all involved, we would be very grateful.
What is Picnic in the Park?
Picnic in the Park is a time for people with learning disabilities to come together, meet - and make - friends, and have fun being themselves. The day includes a wide range of free events including interactive performances from the Dark Horse Theatre Company, live music, and drumming workshops.
The day is free for anyone with a learning disability, their family, friends, and the wider community. It's a day to celebrate the Learning Disability community in Kirklees, breaking down barriers and helping create a friendlier, fairer, and more welcoming world for everyone.
Why does Picnic in the Park Matter?
Picnic in the Park Matters because people with learning disabilities experience higher levels of loneliness and social isolation than non-disabled people and have fewer chances to take part in leisure activities or socialise with their peers. Research shows, for example, 30% of young people with a learning disability spend less than an hour outside on a typical Saturday.
The Picnic offers people the opportunity to increase their social interactions, maintain and develop new social networks and friendships and gives them increased confidence to take part in community activities.
Why not come along?
The picnic is free and open to everyone, not just peope with a learning disability. This year, it will be held on 21st June at Greenhead Park Huddersfield from 11am to 2pm. We'd love to see you there!
