The Wakefield SMI Group formed as they wanted to increase the number of people in Wakefield with a serious mental illness (SMI) having their Annual Health Check.
People with a serious mental illness are more likely to sadly die between 15 and 20 years younger than those without a serious mental illness. Annual Health Checks are important as they give patients an overstall status of their health and help indentify any potential risks or underlying medical conditions before symptoms begin.
The group decided to co-produce information leaflets to encourage people to attend their checks by using art created by patients with serious mental illness.
They chose Tony Wade as the artist. He showed themsilk paintings and the techniques that you can use whilst working on silk. Tony discussed that he would run workshops in the community to paint local landmarks.
The workshops have helped produce these wonderful results which they have put into a virtual art gallery for you to browse.
If you or a family member have a serious mental illness, please remember to attend your annual health check.
